Background

John Faulkner was born in London, England in 1918. At the age of nineteen he joined the London Rifle Brigade and served during World War II in France. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London and Brighton College of Art ,Sussex, England where he obtained his Masters in Fine Art.He traveled extensively in Europe, studied under Francois Desnoyer French Painter (1894-1972) in Sete, France.Taught painting in Spain and Renaissance Art in Italy. He lived in Cornwall in the South West of England before coming to California to live in 1967. He taught Drawing, Painting and Art History at the University of Santa Cruz, California, as well as Art History at the Junior Colleges: Cabrillo, Monterey Peninsular, Foothill and Deanza and at the Villa Montalvo Center for the Arts (The Seeds of Contemporary Art) in Saratoga, California he taught an eight week painting workshop between 1970 and 1980. In 1969, together with British Artist Peter Blythe, John held Landscape workshops at Cabrillo College. In March of 1969 John lectured on Art History and held workshops in landscape painting through University of California Extension. In England John was a faculty member for nine years at Cornwall' s Reduth School of Art., Redruth, Cornwall, England. John had exhibited with many-noted Cornish and British Artists: Dame Barbara Hepworth, Denis Mitchel, Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon, Ben Nicholson, Gillian Ayres, and Victor Passmore to name a few. He was a member of the Artist International Association in London as well as the Newlyn and Penwith Societies in Cornwall. He carried out murals for ships of the Svenska Lloyd Shipping Company in Sweden as well as murals and relief's for new schools of the Cornwall Education Committee. One Mural is at St, Stephens School in Cornwall. He also did stage Design for Exeter University. He lectured on Contemporary Art at Salford Art Gallery in Manchester which was sponsored by Carnegie Bequest. In 1954 John was Art Master at Woodbridge School in Suffolk. He created and designed décor and sets for The Dramatic Society of Woodbridge School's presentation of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's "The School for Scandal". John formed the Woodbridge Art Group in Woodbridge, Suffolk in the early 1950's, which came about through classes he taught at Abbey School in Woodbridge.
